  • Only wash full loads of laundry, using as little water as possible.
  • Use the cold water cycle for all wash-loads, except heavily soiled loads, since up to 90% of the energy used for washing clothes goes to heating the water.
  • Use highly concentrated detergent to minimize the amount of chemicals entering our environment.
  • Use only the manufacturer recommended dose of detergent to eliminate residue, maintain the quality of your clothes, reduce service calls, and minimize the amount of detergent entering our environment.
  • Recycle your detergent bottles, rather than throwing them in the trash.
  • Clean the dryer lint trap before using the machine to keep the air circulating efficiently.
  • Separate towels and heavier cottons from lighter-weight clothes before drying to minimize dry times.
  • Immediately remove clothes from the dryer to reduce the need for ironing clothes. This not only saves you time, but saves energy too.

Clean & Green Laundry

Clean & Green Laundry Room

Reducing the impact of your laundry rooms on our environment is easier than you might think.  We’ve identified five things that should be considered if you are interested in saving water, reducing CO2 emissions, or eliminating excess detergent from entering our environment.  Learn below how high-efficiency washers, professional venting, card payment systems, super-concentrated detergent, and environmentally oriented signage can help you have a clean & green laundry room and help preserve the fabric of our planet.

front-load vs. top-load washers

Maytag Energy Advantage™ high-efficiency, front-load washers not only offer superior cleaning results and reduce time required for drying, they also save 10 gallons of water per cycle when compared to a conventional, inefficient top-load washer. That’s a water savings of over 10,000 gallons annually for the average washer in a common area laundry room! An additional benefit of these water-saving washers is that the reduced drying time that they deliver due to superior water extraction during the spin cycle saves energy during drying, reducing the cost of operating the laundry room.

dryer vent performance

Note: CO2 emissions calculation based on data provided by www.thegreenguide.com.

The key to effective dryer performance is unrestricted airflow, and the only way to ensure this is through properly installed venting and professional cleaning. Improper venting extends drying times, increasing CO2 emissions and frustrating the people who use the laundry room. A dirty vent with airflow restricted by 25% can increase CO2 emissions an estimated 850 lbs. annually for each dryer in a common area laundry room!

card vs. coin payment systems

card vs. coin payment

Note: Gas savings based on actual Mac-Gray experience. CO2 emissions calculation based on data provided by www.fueleconomy.gov.

Card payment is not only more convenient than coin payment for people using a common area laundry room; it’s also a lot more environmentally friendly. For every $2,000 collected from a coin-operated laundry room, the MPG for the collector’s vehicle is reduced by 2%. That’s because the added weight of coins results in the need to fill up the collector’s gas tank more frequently, depleting our resources and adding CO2 emissions to our environment. We believe that converting the coin-operated industry to card operation could save an estimated 50,000 gallons of gas and 500 tons of CO2 from entering our environment each year!

detergent usage

detergent usage

Note: Calculation based on detergent manufacturer recommendations and Maytag specifications.

Unfortunately, dirty wastewater and detergent are expelled into our environment with every wash cycle, so from an environmental standpoint, it’s important to use no more than the recommended amount of detergent in combination with high-efficiency washers. Even the new 2x concentrated detergent is comprised of mostly water, so using super-concentrated (10x!) detergent doesn’t compromise cleaning efficacy, but does reduce the associated additional packaging, transportation cost and emissions, as well as residual waste during rinsing. In fact, we estimate that using super-concentrated detergent in a high-efficiency washer prevents over 10,000 gallons of wastewater and 12 gallons of detergent from entering our environment every year!

environmental signage

An important part of maintaining a clean & green laundry room is assisting the people who use the facility with making environmentally sound decisions when laundering their clothes. Educational signage generates awareness and helps people understand that the choices they make in the laundry room have a significant impact on the environment.
